About Me and Why I search for Textiles
More Than Dog Beds began after a weaving tour in Guatemala. After touring for 10 days, buying fabulous textiles, huipiles, corte and learning the intricate steps involved in weaving I learned more than I thought possible. I watched the weavers dye the thread, set up the loom and operate the large foot looms. After returning home I thought about how my direct purchases from each weaver made such an impact. As this was my first exposure to woven textiles, I was hooked! I returned with 8 pieces of corte and each piece is 6 yards long! I had no idea what I would do with all the textiles until a client was in my office and asked for a dog bed out of the fabric. I figured I can sew so why not?? 30 dog beds later I was headed to Guatemala on my own and 4 years later I have expanded to tote and market bags, dog collars and leashes.
During my many travels to Guatemala, at least 4 times a year, I have met and kept in touch with many families and friends. In addition to taking sewing supplies and sewing machines to Guatemala, I have also introduced the SBDC International Trade platform to groups in Panajachel. SBDC is a free business resource for anyone wanting to grow and expand their small business. My adviser, Julio de la Mestas Garcia, here in San Antonio has been a tremendous help to me in setting up my business.
In addition to More Than Dog Beds, I own Cowboy Kennels, a pet boarding facility in San Antonio TX. I am married to my favorite person ( who also happens to be a Veterinarian), I have 3 children and 2 dogs.
